KEYBOARDING & COMPUTER
APPLICATIONS
Course Description
Prerequisite: None
This is a 1 credit, semester long, required course which places emphasis on techniques of computer keyboarding operations
and mastery of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and desktop publishing performance. It also
emphasizes accuracy of copy produced. This plan of emphasis is in harmony with the
generally accepted computer application principles of skill learning and with a large body
of keyboarding research. Formatting within the word processing section includes
arranging, spacing, and placing copy according to accepted conventions for specific
documents (letters, reports, tables, forms, and so on). Also, the spreadsheet
section of this course is used for financial analysis and recordkeeping of many types.
The third section of this course explores the use of the database. This
electronic collection of related information is stored, retrieved, and manipulated in ways
that meet the needs of the user. This plan along with the South-Western Keyboarding
and Information Processing text will be used in conjunction with our newest
software, Microsoft
Office 2007, an
integrated applications suite.
Guaranteed Graduate Outcomes:
- The students will learn the alphabetic and numeric keys on the computer.
- The students will be able to read different scales used in typical keyboarding
situations.
- The students will learn to format letters, memos, reports, and tables according
to standard keyboarding rules.
- The students will be able to format financial worksheets in a manner that can be
used for comparison and manipulation.
- The students will be able to create, manipulate, and extract information created
in a database.
- The Students will be able to create flyers, posters, tables,
calendars, multi-sided documents using Microsoft Publisher 2007.
- The students will be able to become an independent learner by following
appropriate directions.
Objectives:
The students will adjust computer for correct margins, spacing and
style
The students will demonstrate proficiently how to operate the keyboard by touch
The students will use the computer with skill and appropriate functionality
The students will apply format to all documents according to standard keyboarding rules
The students will practice importing clip art/photos to file via Internet
The students will apply all learned skills when formatting spreadsheets, databases,
desktop
publishing assignments as an independent learner
